Native-Quality Video Streaming
RideStream plays every video at the file's original resolution and bitrate. There is no adaptive downscaling and no quality loss — you watch exactly what's on disk, delivered over your own Wi-Fi.
Original Quality, Every Time
RideStream streams the original file directly — no re-encoding, no resolution scaling, and no bitrate throttle. Whether your movie is 1080p, 1440p or 4K, the receiver plays it at its true native quality, exactly as it was encoded.
Because the video is not re-encoded during playback, the host CPU stays mostly idle and battery drain is minimal. The only thing that limits playback is the throughput of the network between your host and receiver.
Direct Play & Format Compatibility
| Scenario | What Happens |
|---|---|
| Receiver supports the file | Direct Play — raw bytes streamed over HTTP at the file's original resolution and bitrate. Zero quality loss. |
| Only the container is incompatible | Remux — the container headers are repackaged in real time; the original video frames are untouched. |
| Receiver can't decode the codec | Transcode — the stream is converted on the fly for compatibility only. Your original file on disk is never modified. |
Compatibility handling is automatic and transparent — see the Transcoding Engine guide for the technical details.
Getting the Best Playback
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi or a wired LAN for high-bitrate 4K content. 2.4 GHz channels offer far less throughput.
- Keep the host and receiver on the same network — all traffic stays local, so distance and interference matter more than raw internet speed.
- Traveling or off-network? Use Copy from Server to transfer the original files to local storage and play them offline at full quality.
🔧 Troubleshooting
❓ Why Does High-Bitrate 4K Lag on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi?
2.4 GHz Wi-Fi channels are susceptible to interference from Bluetooth, microwaves, and neighboring routers, and offer much lower throughput than 5 GHz. Switch your router to a 5 GHz band or use a wired LAN connection for full native-quality playback.
❓ Does Streaming Reduce Video Quality?
No. RideStream streams the original file at its native resolution and bitrate. It only remuxes or transcodes when a receiver cannot decode the format for compatibility reasons, and your original file on disk always remains untouched.
